Akufo-Addo jibes Mahama; says he did not inherit a ‘rich father’

President Akufo-Addo has aimed a thinly veiled dig at his predecessor John Mahama, insisting he inherited “an empty treasury” from the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.

The president is currently embarking on a one-week tour of the three Northern Regions, and made a stop at the Upper West regional capital of Wa, to interact with the chiefs and people of the community.

He went ahead to commission a water project in Jambusi on Monday, after which a short ceremony was organised in order for him to address the people.

Speaking in the aftermath of the commissioning, president Akufo-Addo lamented the state of the economy he inherited from the erstwhile Mahama government.

According to him, his government has a lot of work to do in order to build up public financing.

He went on to describe himself as “an unlucky son” who “did not inherit a rich father”.

Addressing the gathering, President Akufo-Addo said: “The truth of the matter is that I am not a lucky son.

“I did not inherit a rich father. The inheritance I got from my predecessor was about an empty treasury so I happen to work my way from the bottom up.

“But I know that with your support, I will find the money and we will do these things that need to be done.”

He further assured that “there are better days ahead for all of us in Ghana”, adding that his government will do its best to fulfil all of its promises.
